Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that survives stomach acid to colonize the intestinal tract. It acts as a temporary flora to protect the beneficial organisms in the intestine. Adults:
- Diarrhea associated with antibiotics: 250-500 mg two to four times a day.
- Diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile: 1 gram daily for 4 weeks along with antibiotic treatment.
- Acute diarrhea: 250 mg twice a day for 5 days.
- Crohn's disease: 250 mg three times daily for up to 9 weeks.
- Ulcerative colitis: 250 mg three times daily.
- Helicobacter pylori infections: 250-500 mg twice daily in addition to usual treatment.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): 250 mg twice daily.
- Traveler's diarrhea: 250 mg per day.
Children:
- Acute diarrhea (over three months): 250 mg twice daily for five days.
- Acute diarrhea (under three months): 125 mg twice daily for five days.
